Display of Vehicle Decals Eliminated
effective January 1, 2008, for residents of Botetourt County
and the towns of Buchanan, Fincastle, and Troutville
As a result, you will not receive a decal application as in previous years.
Instead, a Vehicle Registration/License Fee (VRLF) will be included on your personal property tax statements. The 2008 statement will be mailed this fall. The VRLF, in an amount equal to the previous decal cost, will be based on vehicle ownership (situs) within Botetourt County on January 1 of the tax year.
It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you keep the office of the Commissioner of the Revenue informed, within the required 30-day notification period, of any and all changes of the status of any of your vehicles.
Failure to keep the Commissioner informed is not only contrary to County Code; it also will result in your personal property bill, and the new VRLF, being incorrect. It is the property owner’s responsibility to keep account information accurate and timely. You may keep the Commissioner informed of changes in your vehicle ownership by calling (540) 473-8271 or 8273. Additions may be handled by mail or faxed to (540) 473-8289.
We suggest that you remove your County or Town windshield decals prior to April 16, 2008. For your information, the City of Roanoke, the County of Roanoke and the Town of Vinton also are eliminating the display of decals effective 2008.
This change does NOT have any effect on your vehicle’s Virginia Safety Inspection—safety inspections must continue according to rules of the Virginia State Police.
